How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Business (2026 Guide)

If you run a local business in Ontario, Google Reviews are the single most important factor in whether new customers find you or your competitor.

Not your logo. Not your website colours. Not your social media following. Reviews.

Why Google Reviews Matter More Than Anything

Businesses with 10+ reviews get 3x more clicks from Google Maps than businesses with zero. 88% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Google uses review count and rating as a direct ranking factor for local search.

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "auto repair Etobicoke," Google shows three businesses in the Map Pack. The one with 47 reviews at 4.8 stars gets the click. The one with 2 reviews gets ignored. Every time.

When to Ask for Reviews

The golden window is 1-24 hours after completing a job. The customer is happy, the experience is fresh, and they're most likely to follow through. Don't wait a week — by then they've moved on.

Best timing by industry: auto repair — when they pick up the car. Restaurant — day after a special event or catering. Contractor — after final walkthrough. Salon — before they leave the chair.

How to Ask (Without Being Awkward)

The biggest mistake: saying "Could you leave us a review?" This is vague and forgettable.

Instead, try: "Hey [name], thanks for choosing us. If you were happy with the work, a Google review would help us a lot. I'll text you the link right now — takes 30 seconds."

Then actually send the link. The direct review link format is: search your business on Google → click "Write a review" → copy that URL. Or generate it through your Google Business Profile dashboard.

The Automation Approach

Manual requests work, but you'll forget. The best system: after every completed job, your system automatically sends an SMS with the review link. "Thanks for choosing [Business Name]! If you have 30 seconds, a Google review would mean the world: [link]."

This can be set up through Zapier, or through a custom automation system built into your website. At Forge Web, our Growth and Dominate packages include automated review request systems that send SMS or email triggers after job completion.

What About Negative Reviews?

Don't panic. Respond professionally within 24 hours. Acknowledge the issue, apologize, and offer to make it right offline. A thoughtful response to a negative review actually builds trust — people see that you care.

Never: argue publicly, offer incentives for review removal, or create fake positive reviews.

The Goal: 30 Reviews in 90 Days

Start with the people who already love you. Past customers from the last 6 months who you know were happy. Send them a personal message with the link. Most businesses can get 10-15 reviews in the first two weeks this way.

Then automate going forward. Every new customer gets a review request. Within 90 days, you'll have enough reviews to dominate your local market on Google.
